1) What is moving before open?
The election and company earnings are pulling stocks in different directions. SPY gained about 0.8%, QQQ rose about 0.2% and the small-company IWM fund advanced about 1.3%. The stronger small-company performance is useful context, but it does not guarantee that the gain will last through regular trading. 2) Why Block and Arista stand out
Block’s November 3 earnings showed gross profit of about $3.24 billion, up 22%, with growth in both Cash App and Square. The company raised its 2026 adjusted profit-per-share outlook to $4.15. Adjusted profit excludes certain accounting costs and differs from standard-accounting profit. The practical test is whether customer growth can continue to produce profit while lending losses stay manageable. Arista’s November 3 report showed $3.66 billion in third-quarter revenue and $1.20 in adjusted profit per share. Management forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $3.9–4.0 billion. That supports a strong networking-demand story, while reliance on large customers and their spending plans remains a risk.
3) Where the election changes the investment debate
First Solar rose as investors reconsidered the outlook for clean-energy policy. Support for domestic manufacturing matters to its profit economics, but the election does not itself create a new subsidy. Its October 29 report also reduced the full-year sales forecast, so delivery execution remains important. HCA’s gain puts insurance coverage and hospital reimbursement back in focus. The company estimated that a shift toward uninsured patients reduced third-quarter pretax income by about $400 million. Earlier analyst research identified hospitals as possible beneficiaries of negotiations over Medicaid funding. These remain conditional policy possibilities. Gold rose as the dollar weakened following the election, according to Reuters. Newmont’s advance fits that commodity backdrop: higher gold prices can lift sales, although production volumes and operating costs still determine how much reaches profit.
4) Why the outlook matters as much as the reported quarter
Datadog’s November 4 release reported revenue of about $1.20 billion, up 35%, and adjusted profit per share of $0.81. Its fourth-quarter revenue forecast of $1.19–1.20 billion implies little sequential sales growth. The shares fell after the report; the key next question is whether customer usage can sustain growth from the higher base. Skyworks’ November 3 results covered the quarter before its combination with Qorvo closed. Its December-quarter forecast covers the combined business, so the revenue totals are not directly comparable. Management expects smartphone revenue to decline by a low-teens percentage sequentially and sees adjusted profit per share of about $1.25. Integration costs, financing expense and the pace of cost savings matter for the combined company.
5) What to watch next
The ISM services survey is scheduled for November 4 during trading. It asks businesses about activity, orders, employment and prices; strong activity can support growth expectations, while persistent price pressure can complicate the interest-rate outlook. Read those signals together. Arm is scheduled to discuss its fiscal second-quarter results after close, and Qualcomm has confirmed that its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year results will be released after close. Investors can compare demand commentary with the very different reactions to Arista, Datadog and Skyworks. Trimble, Comfort Systems USA and Vertiv are included in the price table. Keep position sizes and potential losses in view: company outlooks and the interpretation of election results can change quickly.
